This painting was from a series I made after returning from Japan made with Japanese Kuretake watercolours. I became quite obsessed with Japanese prints of Yokai, the spectral world. There is something about the picture plane of Japanese prints that I like. I could never get the conventions of perspective – I can understand them and even use perspective. I just don’t see why you would want to make something two dimensional look three dimensional. I think that’s quite a sculptor’s concern. If you work with three dimensions on a daily basis; you feel the solidity of things naturally.
